How the pet air travel size calculator works

Airlines decide how your pet flies by one thing first: size. A small pet that fits an under-seat carrier can ride in the cabin with you. A larger pet has to travel in the climate-controlled hold as checked baggage or, if it is unaccompanied or too big for the hold rules, as manifest air cargo. This pet carrier size calculator takes your pet and carrier measurements, checks them against the airline you pick, and shows all three options side by side so you know which one is realistic before you book.

In-cabin pet carrier dimensions

Every airline sets a maximum under-seat carrier size, and it changes with the aircraft. Soft-sided carriers are usually allowed a little more height than hard-sided ones because they flex. As a rough guide, common under-seat limits sit around 17 to 19 inches long, 11 to 13 inches wide, and 8 to 11 inches high. Your pet must be able to stand up, turn around, and lie down naturally inside the carrier, so measure your pet standing, not curled up. The default limits in the tool can be adjusted because the same airline can allow a different size on a regional jet than on a wide-body.

Weight and the one-pet rule

Most carriers do not publish a hard in-cabin weight number. Instead the pet plus carrier must fit fully under the seat without forcing. A few airlines, such as JetBlue, set a firm combined limit near 20 pounds. Airlines also limit how many pets are allowed in the cabin per flight, so booking early matters.

Checked baggage versus manifest cargo

These two are often confused. Checked baggage means the pet travels in the hold on the same flight as you, handled under your ticket. Manifest cargo means the pet is booked separately through the airline cargo division, often required when the pet flies unaccompanied, is a large breed, or crosses certain borders. Cargo kennels follow the IATA Live Animals Regulations: a rigid container where the animal can stand, turn, and lie down, with ventilation on all four sides for international trips.

Pet cargo temperature restrictions

Hold and cargo travel carries temperature embargoes. Many airlines refuse to load a pet when the forecast ground temperature at any airport on the route is above about 85 F (29 C) or below about 45 F (7 C), unless you provide a vet acclimation certificate. Snub-nosed, or brachycephalic, breeds such as bulldogs and Persian cats face tighter rules or outright bans in the hold because they are more prone to breathing stress. The cabin has no temperature embargo, which is one more reason small pets are easier to fly.

Airlines that ship pets in cargo

Policies shift often, so confirm at booking. As of the latest review: Alaska carries pets in the cabin, in the climate-controlled hold, and as unaccompanied cargo through its Pet Connect program. American allows cabin pets and runs American PetEmbark cargo, but only accepts checked pets for active-duty US military and State Department personnel on orders. Delta and United focus on cabin pets and have scaled back general cargo. Southwest and JetBlue are cabin only and do not carry pets in the hold at all. Lufthansa, Air Canada, Emirates, and Qatar move larger pets as checked baggage or cargo, with Emirates handling almost all pets through its cargo and approved-shipper network rather than the cabin.

Frequently asked questions

Most airlines allow an under-seat carrier roughly 17 to 19 inches long, 11 to 13 inches wide, and 8 to 11 inches high, though the exact limit depends on the aircraft. Your pet must be able to stand, turn around, and lie down inside it. Enter your carrier size above to check it against a specific airline.
Checked baggage means the pet flies in the hold on your own flight, under your ticket. Manifest cargo means the pet is booked separately through the airline cargo division, which is usually required when the pet travels unaccompanied, is a large breed, or crosses certain borders. Cargo often costs more but accepts bigger kennels.
Yes. Many airlines will not carry a pet in the hold or as cargo when the forecast ground temperature on the route is above about 85 F (29 C) or below about 45 F (7 C) without a vet acclimation certificate. The cabin has no temperature embargo.
Alaska (Pet Connect), American (PetEmbark), Air Canada, Lufthansa, Emirates, and Qatar carry dogs as cargo or checked baggage, subject to breed, size, and temperature rules. Southwest and JetBlue do not carry pets in the hold, and several US carriers have limited general cargo to specific travellers. Always confirm the current policy with the airline.
Measure your pet standing: length from the nose to the base of the tail, height from the floor to the top of the head, and width across the shoulders. The carrier needs to be longer and taller than those figures so the pet can stand and turn. The tool suggests a minimum carrier size from your pet measurements.
Yes. Brachycephalic or snub-nosed breeds such as bulldogs, pugs, and Persian cats are more prone to breathing problems at altitude, so many airlines restrict or ban them from the hold and cargo. They can often still travel in the cabin if they fit an under-seat carrier.

About this tool. This free Boarding Gate calculator compares in-cabin, checked baggage, and cargo pet travel using published airline guidance. Limits vary by aircraft and change often, and the defaults can be adjusted. Fees are estimates shown each way per carrier. Always confirm size limits, breed rules, temperature embargoes, and health paperwork directly with your airline before you book.
