How US sales tax refunds work for visitors
Unlike most countries, the United States has no national sales tax and no nationwide refund for international visitors. The default rule is simple: once you take the item out of the store, the sales tax is not refundable. There is no tax desk at a US airport where a tourist hands over receipts and walks away with cash, the way the VAT schemes in Europe work. That surprises many travellers, so this tool is built to give the honest answer first and then show the few real exceptions.
Only a short list of places let an international visitor claim sales tax back, and each works differently. This estimator covers the US options and the main overseas VAT schemes so you can compare before you spend.
Texas tax-free shopping
Texas is the best known option. The refund is run by private companies, not the state, at participating stores in outlet malls and shopping centres. You buy new, unused goods, keep the original paper receipts, and bring your passport, visa, and proof of an international flight within 30 days. The company refunds the sales tax, up to the combined state and local rate of 8.25 percent, minus a processing fee that can take a large share of the total. A minimum amount of sales tax per store usually applies.
Louisiana Tax Free Shopping
Louisiana runs a state-backed program for foreign visitors at participating retailers. You need a foreign passport, a valid US visitor visa, and an international travel ticket, and you must be visiting for 90 days or less. The program refunds the state sales tax on tangible goods you remove from the state, minus a small handling fee. Food, drink, and services consumed in Louisiana do not qualify.
Washington State nonresident refund
Washington is a different case. It is not a tourist scheme but a refund for residents of nearby low-tax places, including Oregon, Alaska, Montana, and several Canadian territories and Alberta. Qualifying nonresidents can claim back the 6.5 percent state portion of the sales tax once per calendar year, and only if they accumulated at least 25 dollars of state tax, which is about 385 dollars of spending. You apply with proof of residency and your receipts.
Does the UK, EU, or Singapore refund VAT?
Abroad the picture is better, because these countries use value added tax that is already built into the price. Non-EU visitors to the European Union can reclaim a large part of the VAT, often around 12 percent after the operator fee, on purchases above a minimum such as 100 euros, by getting the form stamped by customs on departure. Singapore refunds its 9 percent GST through the Tourist Refund Scheme on spending above 100 Singapore dollars. The United Kingdom is the exception that caught many out: it abolished its in-store VAT refund scheme in January 2021, so visitors can no longer claim VAT on goods carried home in their luggage.
