Introduction

A Japan visa for UAE residents must generally be submitted through the official VFS Global arrangement for the applicant’s emirate of residence. This process covers short-term tourism eVisas as well as sticker visas for tourism, business visits, family visits and transit.

As of May 2026, foreign nationals living in the UAE who require a short-stay Japan visa cannot complete the entire eVisa application independently through the public online portal. Applications from the UAE must be submitted through an accredited agency, currently VFS Global.

This arrangement applies to residents of both Japanese consular districts in the UAE:

Applications are submitted through the VFS Global route serving the Abu Dhabi district.

Do not submit through the Dubai jurisdiction merely because an appointment appears available there. Applying through the wrong district can delay the application or result in the file not being accepted.

Important Update About Direct eVisa Applications

Older guides may state that Abu Dhabi residents can apply directly through Japan’s public eVisa website without using VFS.

That information should not be treated as current.

The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs eVisa guidance was updated on 15 May 2026. Under the current arrangement, foreign nationals residing in the UAE who require a short-stay visa must apply through an accredited agency for the Japan eVisa route.

The practical position is therefore:

• Dubai residents apply through VFS.
• Sharjah residents apply through VFS.
• Ajman residents apply through VFS.
• Umm Al Quwain residents apply through VFS.
• Ras Al Khaimah residents apply through VFS.

Do not follow an older eVisa application tutorial unless the Japanese authorities officially restore that option.

Japan eVisa or Sticker Visa?

Japan provides electronic and passport-sticker visa routes. The appropriate option depends on your travel purpose, nationality and the category offered by VFS.

Japan eVisa

The Japan eVisa is mainly designed for short-term tourism.

It is generally:

• Issued for a short tourist visit
• Single entry
• Used by ordinary-passport holders

Japan Sticker Visa

A sticker visa is physically placed in the applicant’s passport.
