IRCTC Account: Creation, User ID and Password Recovery

Almost every online train booking in India runs through one account: your IRCTC login. Get it set up cleanly and booking is quick; lose the username or password the night before a Tatkal rush and the stress is real. This guide covers creating an IRCTC account properly, the username and password rules that trip people up, and exactly how to recover a forgotten user ID or password without locking yourself out.

Creating your IRCTC account

Register only on the official portal, irctc.co.in, or the official Rail Connect app. Open the Register option, then work through three short stages: your login details, personal details, and address. You choose a username, set a password, and pick a security question with an answer you will remember — that answer matters later for password recovery, so make it something fixed, not a detail that changes.

Activation needs both a verification code sent to your email and one sent to your mobile number. Enter both to finish, and your account is live. Completing your profile’s KYC with Aadhaar afterwards is worth doing, because a verified account unlocks smoother Tatkal booking and a higher monthly ticket limit.

Username and password rules

Two rules save you a lot of retries. The username must be unique — if someone has taken your first choice you will need a variation — and it is typically a short alphanumeric string without spaces. The password must mix cases and character types: a practical password is at least eight characters with an uppercase letter, a lowercase letter, a number and a special symbol. Set these to something you can reproduce under pressure, because a mistyped password during a Tatkal window costs you the booking.

One important restriction: do not open a second account because you forgot the first. IRCTC’s terms limit multiple registrations tied to the same identity, email or mobile number, and duplicate or suspicious accounts can be deactivated. Recover the old account instead.

Recovering a forgotten user ID

Use the Forgot User ID link on the login page. You enter your registered email address — some flows also ask for your date of birth — along with the captcha, and your user ID is sent to that email, usually from an official care@irctc.co.in address, so check spam if it does not arrive. There is also an option to receive the user ID by SMS to your registered mobile number. If both your registered email and mobile are lost, you will need to contact IRCTC customer care and prove your identity with your name, date of birth and past booking details.

How do you reset a forgotten IRCTC password?

Click Forgot Password, enter your username and the captcha, and choose how to verify yourself:

  • By OTP: a one-time password is sent to your registered mobile number. Enter it, then set and confirm a new password.
  • By security question: answer the question you set at registration, and IRCTC emails you reset instructions.

Because recovery depends on your registered mobile and email, keep both current. If you change your phone number, update it in your IRCTC profile while you still have access — doing it after you are locked out is far harder.

A note on the site and apps

IRCTC periodically refreshes its website and apps, and labels or layouts may shift between versions. Whatever the interface looks like, two things stay constant: register and sign in only on official IRCTC channels, and never enter your password or OTP on a page you reached through an advert or a message link. Phishing pages that imitate IRCTC are common around festival booking seasons.

With your account ready, the next steps are checking train seat availability before you book and tracking your PNR status afterwards. On travel day, our guide to live train running status keeps you on schedule.

Frequently asked questions

Can I have two IRCTC accounts?

No. IRCTC’s terms restrict multiple registrations tied to the same identity, email or mobile number, and duplicate accounts can be deactivated. If you forget your details, recover the existing account rather than creating a new one.

How do I recover my IRCTC user ID?

Use the Forgot User ID link, enter your registered email (and date of birth if asked) with the captcha, and your user ID is emailed to you. You can also request it by SMS to your registered mobile number.

How do I reset my IRCTC password?

Click Forgot Password, enter your username and captcha, then verify by OTP sent to your registered mobile, or by answering your security question to receive email reset instructions. Set a new password to finish.

What are the IRCTC password requirements?

A valid password is generally at least eight characters and mixes an uppercase letter, a lowercase letter, a number and a special symbol. Choose something you can type quickly and reliably, since errors cost you time during Tatkal booking.

Why was my IRCTC account deactivated?

Accounts can be deactivated for duplicate registrations, suspicious activity or incomplete information. Keep one account, complete your KYC, and keep your registered email and mobile number current to avoid problems.
