Fee and DCC warning

If an ATM or card machine at MAN offers to charge you in your home currency, decline and choose GBP. That offer is Dynamic Currency Conversion: the machine sets its own exchange rate, usually a few percent worse than your card network's. Check the operator fee on screen before you confirm, and cancel if it is high.

Operators: Travelex. Airport counters price in a margin; compare the quote with the mid-market rate in your banking app first.

Manchester Airport (MAN) ATMs and Currency Exchange: United Kingdom Airport Money Guide

This guide lists every ATM and currency exchange point we could confirm at Manchester Airport, sorted by terminal and by which side of security it sits on. Use the finder above to filter by terminal. Below, you will find how to get pound sterling (GBP) at the lowest cost, whether you are landing in Manchester or only passing through MAN on a connection, and which screens and counters to say no to.

Manchester has ATMs in all three terminals, both before and after security. Currency exchange at Manchester is provided by Travelex, with bureaux after security in Terminals 1 and 3 and desks in the terminals’ public areas. Where to find ATMs and Travelex currency exchange across Manchester’s three terminals, which option gives the best rate, and how much cash you need for the city.

Terminal financial overview

Manchester Airport has three terminals, with a rail and tram station sitting between Terminals 1 and 2. Cash is easy to get, but withdrawing pounds from an ATM beats the exchange desks for most travellers. This guide shows where the machines and Travelex counters sit, how to keep fees down, and how to pay your way into Manchester.

Manchester has three terminals. Terminals 1 and 3 are adjacent and a short walk apart; Terminal 2 is a separate building reached by the covered Skylink walkway or a free shuttle. The rail and tram station sits between Terminals 1 and 2.

Whichever terminal you use, ATMs are available and a Travelex desk is usually nearby. The Skylink walkway and free shuttle connect the terminals to The Station, so you are never far from cash or the trains and trams into the city.

Across 3 terminals, this page lists 6 ATM locations (3 airside, 3 landside) and 3 exchange counter, kiosk or machines (2 airside, 1 landside). Terminal 1 has the widest choice.

  • Terminal 1: Several airlines; linked to The Station. 2 ATM locations, 1 exchange point.
  • Terminal 2: Most long-haul and many short-haul flights. 2 ATM locations, 1 exchange point.
  • Terminal 3: Ryanair and other airlines. 2 ATM locations, 1 exchange point.

ATMs at Manchester Airport (MAN)

Manchester has ATMs in all three terminals, both before and after security. Withdrawing pounds from an ATM gives you the Visa or Mastercard network rate, better value than the exchange desks for all but small amounts. The machines accept international cards on the Visa/Plus and Mastercard/Cirrus networks; check whether a machine adds a surcharge before confirming.

Inside security (airside)

After security, ATMs are in the departure lounges of each terminal, convenient for connecting passengers or anyone who wants pounds before the flight.

Before security (landside & arrivals)

Before security, ATMs sit in the check-in halls and arrivals areas near the exits toward The Station, which links the terminals to trains and the Metrolink tram. Arriving, use an arrivals-area ATM before walking through to the rail and tram platforms.

ATM fees and how to keep them down

Airport ATM withdrawals can carry a machine surcharge, and your own bank may add a foreign-ATM fee plus a foreign-transaction fee of around 1–3%. Keep the total down by taking out one larger amount rather than several small ones, declining any offer to be charged in your home currency, and checking whether your card waives foreign-ATM fees before you travel.

Currency exchange counters at MAN

Currency exchange at Manchester is provided by Travelex, with bureaux after security in Terminals 1 and 3 and desks in the terminals’ public areas. You can pre-order currency online for a better rate and collect at the airport. For simply getting pounds on arrival, an ATM is usually cheaper than a counter.

Getting from MAN into Manchester: how to pay

You can reach the city from Manchester without cash. Trains from The Station run to Manchester Piccadilly in around 15–20 minutes; buy a ticket with a card or tap contactless. The Metrolink tram also serves the airport, and buses, taxis and ride-hailing all take cards. Check National Rail and TfGM for current fares. The only cash you really need is for the occasional tip.

Inside vs. outside security strategy

For the best value, withdraw pounds from an ATM and choose pounds rather than your home currency. If you are connecting airside, the departure-lounge ATMs cover you. If you are arriving, an arrivals-area ATM is quickest before The Station. Use Travelex when you need to buy or sell another currency, or your card is not working.

As a rule at MAN: withdraw GBP from a bank ATM landside when you arrive, buy only small amounts at a counter, and sell leftover pounds back before security when you leave. Airside counters exist for convenience, not value, and once you are through passport control you cannot walk back out to compare.

Avoiding Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) markups

Dynamic Currency Conversion is the offer to charge a foreign card in its home currency instead of GBP. It looks helpful because you see a familiar number, but the ATM or shop sets the exchange rate, and it is usually several percent worse than the rate Visa or Mastercard would apply. Airports are where most travellers meet it first.

Whenever an airport ATM or a card terminal offers to charge you in your home currency instead of pounds, decline it and choose pounds. That “convenience” option, called Dynamic Currency Conversion, lets the machine set its own exchange rate, which is typically 3–7% worse than the rate your own bank or card network would use. Paying in the local currency always routes the conversion through your card network (Visa, Mastercard), which is almost always cheaper.

  1. At an ATM, when the screen asks to convert or offers a "guaranteed rate", choose decline or without conversion.
  2. At a card terminal, if asked "GBP or your currency?", pick GBP. If staff choose for you, ask them to redo it.
  3. Read the operator fee on the ATM screen before you confirm. If it is high, cancel and try another bank's machine.
  4. Check your receipt: a printed exchange rate or the word "DCC" means a conversion was applied.

Local cash vs. card tips for Manchester

You need very little cash in Manchester. Contactless cards and mobile wallets work on trains, trams, buses, taxis and nearly everywhere else. Keep perhaps £10–£20 in coins and small notes for the odd market stall or tip. Tipping in the UK is modest: around 10–12.5% in restaurants (sometimes added as a service charge) and rounding up for taxis.

Before you fly, check two things with your bank: the foreign transaction fee on card payments and the fee for overseas ATM withdrawals. A card that waives both makes paying in GBP the cheapest way to spend in United Kingdom. Tell your bank you are travelling if it still asks, carry a backup card from a different network, and keep the airport counter for small top-ups only.

Prices and operators at airports change. We checked this page against the official Manchester Airport and operator listings on 20 October 2026; confirm hours on the airport's own map on the day you travel.
