Fee and DCC warning

If an ATM or card machine at JFK offers to charge you in your home currency, decline and choose USD. That offer is Dynamic Currency Conversion: the machine sets its own exchange rate, usually a few percent worse than your card network's. Check the operator fee on screen before you confirm, and cancel if it is high.

John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) ATMs and Currency Exchange: United States Airport Money Guide

This guide lists every ATM and currency exchange point we could confirm at John F. Kennedy International Airport, sorted by terminal and by which side of security it sits on. Use the finder above to filter by terminal. Below, you will find how to get US dollar (USD) at the lowest cost, whether you are landing in New York or only passing through JFK on a connection, and which screens and counters to say no to.

Currency Exchange International (CXI) runs JFK's exchange counters. The largest cluster is in Terminal 4, and a newer counter opened in Terminal 8 Concourse B in September 2025. ATMs are in every terminal, before and after security.

Terminal financial overview

JFK has five passenger terminals: 1, 4, 5, 7 and 8, linked by the AirTrain. Currency Exchange International (CXI), North America's largest currency exchange company, operates the exchange counters. Terminal 4 has the most: one in Retail Hall West, one in the arrivals hall and one airside in Concourse B near Gate B31, open 06:30 to 22:00.

CXI added a counter in Terminal 8 Concourse B in September 2025. The Port Authority, which runs JFK, shows ATMs and exchange counters on its interactive map rather than in a list, so use that map on the day to find the nearest unit.

Across 5 terminals, this page lists 7 ATM locations (3 airside, 4 landside) and 7 exchange counter, kiosk or machines (2 airside, 5 landside). Terminal 4 has the widest choice.

  • Terminal 1: International airlines (the New Terminal One is being built alongside). 1 ATM location, 1 exchange point.
  • Terminal 4: Delta and many international airlines. 2 ATM locations, 3 exchange points.
  • Terminal 5: JetBlue. 1 ATM location, 1 exchange point.
  • Terminal 7: Several international airlines. 1 ATM location, 1 exchange point.
  • Terminal 8: American Airlines, British Airways and oneworld partners. 2 ATM locations, 1 exchange point.

Inside vs. outside security strategy

Arriving internationally, you clear customs into the landside arrivals hall, where the ATMs and arrivals counters are. Use a bank-branded ATM if you can. Independent machines in US airports often add a surcharge of several dollars, and the screen has to show it before you continue.

Departing, the airside counter in Terminal 4 near Gate B31 is the main option after security. If you need a currency CXI does not keep in stock, reserve it online or by phone and collect it at the airport.

As a rule at JFK: withdraw USD from a bank ATM landside when you arrive, buy only small amounts at a counter, and sell leftover US dollars back before security when you leave. Airside counters exist for convenience, not value, and once you are through passport control you cannot walk back out to compare.

Avoiding Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) markups

Dynamic Currency Conversion is the offer to charge a foreign card in its home currency instead of USD. It looks helpful because you see a familiar number, but the ATM or shop sets the exchange rate, and it is usually several percent worse than the rate Visa or Mastercard would apply. Airports are where most travellers meet it first.

Card readers in New York rarely offer currency conversion, but ATMs and shops at the airport sometimes do when they detect a foreign card. If you are asked whether to pay in your home currency, say no and pay in US dollars.

  1. At an ATM, when the screen asks to convert or offers a "guaranteed rate", choose decline or without conversion.
  2. At a card terminal, if asked "USD or your currency?", pick USD. If staff choose for you, ask them to redo it.
  3. Read the operator fee on the ATM screen before you confirm. If it is high, cancel and try another bank's machine.
  4. Check your receipt: a printed exchange rate or the word "DCC" means a conversion was applied.

Local cash vs. card tips for New York

You can get around New York almost entirely by card. Yellow cabs take cards, the subway and buses accept contactless through OMNY, and most shops take tap-to-pay. Keep small notes for tipping hotel staff and for street vendors.

Before you fly, check two things with your bank: the foreign transaction fee on card payments and the fee for overseas ATM withdrawals. A card that waives both makes paying in USD the cheapest way to spend in United States. Tell your bank you are travelling if it still asks, carry a backup card from a different network, and keep the airport counter for small top-ups only.

Prices and operators at airports change. We checked this page against the official JFK and operator listings on 20 October 2026; confirm hours on the airport's own map on the day you travel.
