ATMs and currency exchange at Dubai International Airport
Quick answer: Travelex runs the exchange counters in all three DXB terminals, landside and in the A, B, C and D gate concourses. Emirates NBD ATMs are in the arrivals halls. The dirham is pegged at 3.6725 per US dollar, so any counter rate far below that is the markup.

Fee and DCC warning
If an ATM or card machine at DXB offers to charge you in your home currency, decline and choose AED. That offer is Dynamic Currency Conversion: the machine sets its own exchange rate, usually a few percent worse than your card network's. Check the operator fee on screen before you confirm, and cancel if it is high.

Dubai International Airport (DXB) ATMs and Currency Exchange: United Arab Emirates Airport Money Guide
This guide lists every ATM and currency exchange point we could confirm at Dubai International Airport, sorted by terminal and by which side of security it sits on. Use the finder above to filter by terminal. Below, you will find how to get UAE dirham (AED) at the lowest cost, whether you are landing in Dubai or only passing through DXB on a connection, and which screens and counters to say no to.
Travelex runs the exchange counters in all three DXB terminals, landside and in the A, B, C and D gate concourses. Emirates NBD ATMs are in the arrivals halls. The dirham is pegged at 3.6725 per US dollar, so any counter rate far below that is the markup.
Terminal financial overview
Dubai International handles more international passengers than any other airport, and its money services are spread across three terminals. Terminal 3 is the Emirates hub with Concourses A, B and C. Terminal 1 serves most other international airlines through Concourse D. Terminal 2 sits on the far side of the airfield and mainly serves flydubai and regional carriers.
Travelex holds the main currency exchange concession and has counters in the arrivals and departures halls of every terminal, plus several inside the A, B, C and D gate areas. Al Ansari Exchange has a departures kiosk in Terminal 1. Emirates NBD, Dubai's government-owned bank, operates the ATMs that Dubai Airports lists for cash withdrawals.
Across 3 terminals, this page lists 5 ATM locations (2 airside, 3 landside) and 8 exchange counter, kiosk or machines (2 airside, 6 landside). Terminal 1 has the widest choice.
- Terminal 1: Most non-Emirates international airlines (Concourse D). 2 ATM locations, 4 exchange points.
- Terminal 2: flydubai and other regional and low-cost airlines. 1 ATM location, 1 exchange point.
- Terminal 3: Emirates (Concourses A, B and C). 2 ATM locations, 3 exchange points.
Inside vs. outside security strategy
If you are arriving in Dubai, use a bank ATM in the arrivals hall after customs rather than the counters you pass first. If you are only connecting, you rarely need dirhams at all: shops and cafes in the concourses take cards and often US dollars.
Use the airside counters in Concourses A to D only for small amounts you need on landing at your next destination. Leftover dirhams are easiest to sell back at a landside departures counter before you go through passport control.
As a rule at DXB: withdraw AED from a bank ATM landside when you arrive, buy only small amounts at a counter, and sell leftover dirhams back before security when you leave. Airside counters exist for convenience, not value, and once you are through passport control you cannot walk back out to compare.
| Option | Typical cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Pay by card in AED | Lowest with a no-foreign-fee card | Transport, shops, food |
| Bank ATM, landside arrivals | Low: your bank’s fee plus any on-screen operator fee | A cash float on arrival |
| Airside ATM | Low to medium, same rules | Connections, last-minute cash |
| Pre-ordered currency | Medium: better than the walk-up rate | Larger amounts, planned trips |
| Travelex walk-up counter | Highest: margin built into the rate | Small top-ups, selling leftovers |
Avoiding Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) markups
Dynamic Currency Conversion is the offer to charge a foreign card in its home currency instead of AED. It looks helpful because you see a familiar number, but the ATM or shop sets the exchange rate, and it is usually several percent worse than the rate Visa or Mastercard would apply. Airports are where most travellers meet it first.
The UAE dirham has been pegged to the US dollar at 3.6725 since 1997. That makes Dubai one of the easiest places to spot a bad rate: if an ATM screen or card terminal offers to charge you in dollars at, say, 3.45, the gap to 3.6725 is the markup. Choose AED every time.
- At an ATM, when the screen asks to convert or offers a "guaranteed rate", choose decline or without conversion.
- At a card terminal, if asked "AED or your currency?", pick AED. If staff choose for you, ask them to redo it.
- Read the operator fee on the ATM screen before you confirm. If it is high, cancel and try another bank's machine.
- Check your receipt: a printed exchange rate or the word "DCC" means a conversion was applied.
Local cash vs. card tips for Dubai
Dubai is close to cashless for visitors. The Metro Red Line runs from Terminals 1 and 3, taxis carry card readers, and ride-hailing apps are card-only. Keep a small amount of dirhams for tips, the abra boats across the Creek and older souk stalls.
Before you fly, check two things with your bank: the foreign transaction fee on card payments and the fee for overseas ATM withdrawals. A card that waives both makes paying in AED the cheapest way to spend in United Arab Emirates. Tell your bank you are travelling if it still asks, carry a backup card from a different network, and keep the airport counter for small top-ups only.
Prices and operators at airports change. We checked this page against the official Dubai International and operator listings on 20 October 2026; confirm hours on the airport's own map on the day you travel.
