How to use the holiday checker

This public holiday checker lists every public, regional and school holiday that falls inside your exact travel dates, then explains what each one means on the ground: closed shops and banks, packed trains, higher hotel prices, alcohol bans or quieter streets.

  1. Add each stop. Pick a country, then your dates. If the country has states or regions, choose yours; leave it on Nationwide only to see national holidays plus regional ones labelled “Only in …”. Add up to six stops for a multi-country trip.
  2. Add your home country (optional). You will see holidays at home that overlap the trip, and long weekends at home worth planning around.
  3. Choose what to show. Bank holidays, half days and make-up workdays, observances and school holidays each have a switch. Tick Show only days that affect travel to hide everything that will not change your plans.
  4. Read the result and export it. Download the dates as a calendar file (.ics) or CSV, copy a summary, save a PDF report, or copy a link that reopens the same trip.

What the colours and labels mean. Every day in the strip has a text label as well as a colour. Holiday is a public or bank holiday where you are. Regional is a holiday only in other regions. Bridge day is a working day many locals take off. Busy period marks curated peaks such as Golden Week or Ramadan. School break, Shops closed (Sundays in Germany, Austria and Switzerland) and Make-up workday (China) complete the legend. Dates marked Expected depend on a moon sighting or lunar calendar; Provisional means the official notice is not out yet.

What actually closes on a public holiday

A public holiday rarely shuts a whole country, but it changes the rhythm of a day in ways that catch visitors out.

  • Shops and supermarkets. In Germany the Shop Closing Act keeps shops closed on Sundays and public holidays, except at stations and airports. Austria and most of Switzerland work the same way on Sundays. Czechia closes stores over 200 square metres on several holidays. In Spain, Italy and the UK many shops in tourist areas open, often with shorter hours.
  • Pharmacies. Most close, but a duty pharmacy (Apotheken-Notdienst, farmacia de guardia, pharmacie de garde) stays open in every area. The address is posted on the door of every closed pharmacy.
  • Banks and offices. Closed almost everywhere, so do not plan a visa appointment, a bank visit or a car pick-up from a city office on a holiday.
  • Museums and sights. Usually open, and busier than normal, but many close on 25 December, 1 January and 1 May.
  • Restaurants. Mostly open in cities. Family-run places may close for a whole week around Tet, Chinese New Year or Ferragosto.

The days on either side matter too. The evening before a long weekend is the busiest time on roads and trains out of big cities, and the last day is the busiest coming back. In Japan the Japan National Tourism Organization says Golden Week trains are fullest at the start and end of the week; in the US, the TSA’s busiest Thanksgiving days are the Tuesday and Wednesday before and the Sunday after.

Regional holidays: why the same country has different days off

Many countries set only a few holidays nationally and let states or regions add the rest. That is why a trip from Munich to Berlin can cross from a holiday into a normal working day.

  • Germany: 9 nationwide holidays, with up to 5 more depending on the state. Corpus Christi (Thu 27 May 2027) is a holiday in Bavaria, Baden-Wurttemberg, Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland, plus parts of Saxony and Thuringia, but not in Berlin or Hamburg. Reformation Day (31 October) is a holiday in nine mostly northern and eastern states, and All Saints’ Day (1 November) in five western and southern ones.
  • Spain: each of the 17 comunidades swaps in its own days, such as Andalusia Day (28 February) or Catalonia’s National Day (11 September). Maundy Thursday is a holiday in every region except Catalonia and Valencia, which take Easter Monday instead.
  • Switzerland: only 4 holidays apply in all 26 cantons; even Good Friday is not a holiday in Ticino or Valais.
  • United States: 11 federal holidays apply to federal offices; states add their own, such as Cesar Chavez Day in California or Patriots’ Day in Massachusetts, and private employers choose which to observe.
  • India: the central government list covers central government offices; each state publishes its own list, so festivals such as Durga Puja, Onam or Pongal are holidays in some states only. We label India’s data as partial for this reason.

Bridge days and long weekends

When a holiday falls on a Tuesday or a Thursday, many people take the Monday or Friday off too, turning one day off into four. Italians call it a ponte (bridge), Spaniards a puente, the French faire le pont, Germans a Brückentag and Austrians a Fenstertag. In 2027, Ascension Day (Thu 6 May) and Corpus Christi (Thu 27 May) create bridge Fridays across much of Europe.

For travellers this means two things. First, demand rises: trains out of cities sell out, motorways back up on the Thursday evening, and hotel prices at the coast and in the mountains climb. Second, the bridge day itself is officially a working day, so museums and shops are mostly open, but small businesses and some offices close. The checker flags every bridge day in your trip and gives the getaway and return days of each long weekend as a crowd window.

Holidays with moving dates

Islamic holidays. The Islamic calendar is lunar, and most countries start Ramadan and the two Eids only after religious authorities sight the new crescent moon, often announced the evening before. Neighbouring countries can differ by a day. For 2027, Ramadan is expected to begin around 8 February, Eid al-Fitr is expected around 9 March (10 March in Indonesia and Malaysia) and Eid al-Adha around 16 May (17 May in Indonesia and Malaysia).

Lunar holidays in East Asia. Chinese New Year (expected Sat 6 February 2027), Korea’s Seollal and Chuseok and Vietnam’s Tet follow the lunisolar calendar. Their dates are calculated in advance, but the length of the break is set by each government, and China fixes its schedule only in an annual notice.

Easter-based holidays. Western Easter Sunday is 28 March 2027 and Orthodox Easter is 2 May 2027. Good Friday, Easter Monday, Ascension (39 days after Easter), Whit Monday and Corpus Christi all move with it.

How the tool marks them. Moon-sighting and lunar dates carry an Expected badge (plus or minus one day). China’s dates for years without an official notice carry a Provisional badge. Nothing estimated is ever shown as confirmed; check official announcements close to your dates.

China’s make-up working days

China lengthens its Spring Festival and National Day breaks by borrowing weekend days and turning them into working days, called tiaoxiu. For 2026 the State Council notice set six make-up working days: 4 January, 14 and 28 February, 9 May, 20 September and 10 October, all weekends. On those days offices, banks, schools and government services open as normal, and trains and roads are busy with commuters. The 2027 notice is expected in early November 2026; until then the tool shows China’s 2027 dates as provisional without any make-up days.

Travelling during Ramadan

During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset. Daily life slows in the daytime and comes alive after the fast is broken at sunset (iftar). Office and shop hours often shorten and shift later, and some restaurants close until sunset, especially away from tourist areas.

  • Eating and drinking in public: Dubai says visitors who are not fasting can eat and drink, though a few outlets close by day. Abu Dhabi asks visitors to refrain from eating, drinking and smoking in public during daylight hours. Elsewhere, eating discreetly or inside hotels and restaurants that stay open is the respectful choice.
  • Alcohol: in the UAE, licensed venues serve alcohol after sunset during Ramadan (Visit Abu Dhabi).
  • Clocks: Morocco moves from GMT+1 to GMT for Ramadan, so recheck train and flight times (Visit Morocco).
  • Eid travel peaks: Eid al-Fitr is the biggest travel week of the year in many Muslim-majority countries. In Indonesia about half the population travels home for Lebaran (mudik), with traffic peaking about three days before Eid, according to the Ministry of Transportation.

For Muslim-majority destinations, read our Morocco itinerary for how Ramadan changes a trip on the ground.

Alcohol bans and dry days

Thailand. Alcohol sales are banned nationwide on major Buddhist holy days: Makha Bucha, Visakha Bucha, Asarnha Bucha, Buddhist Lent Day and the end of Buddhist Lent. Since a Royal Gazette notice of 9 May 2025, hotels licensed under the Hotel Act, licensed entertainment venues in designated tourism zones and international airport terminals may still sell alcohol on those days; shops and convenience stores may not (National News Bureau of Thailand; TAT, May 2026; checked 18 October 2026). Sales can also be restricted on election days. Read more in our guide to Thai culture and traditions.

India. Each state sets its own dry days. In Delhi, Republic Day (26 January), Independence Day (15 August) and Gandhi Jayanti (2 October) are national dry days: liquor shops close and bars, hotels and restaurants cannot serve alcohol (Delhi Excise Department; checked 18 October 2026). Other dry days are notified for festivals and elections.

School holidays in Europe

School holidays often move prices more than public holidays do, because families travel for one or two weeks at a time. Most European countries stagger them so that not everyone travels at once.

  • France splits its winter and spring breaks into three zones, A, B and C, two weeks each, staggered over about a month.
  • Germany rotates summer holidays between the 16 states, so Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia rarely break at the same time.
  • The Netherlands uses three regions (north, middle and south) for spring and summer.

The checker shows school holidays for 32 European countries. Choose a school region to see exact dates, or leave it on All regions for a summary.

Using your home country’s holidays

Add your home country and the checker lists the holidays at home that fall during your trip. Each one is a day off you do not need to book as leave, and a long weekend at home can stretch a short trip into a longer one. Flights home around those dates are also busier and pricier. If you work remotely across time zones, the Time Zone Meeting Planner shows which hours overlap with your team, and the Trip Itinerary Builder turns your dates into a day-by-day plan.

For the rest of your planning, the Travel Budget Calculator estimates daily costs, the Visa Checker covers entry rules, the Schengen Calculator counts days in Europe, and the Airport Arrival Calculator helps on holiday weekends, when airport queues are longest. See all travel tools.

Public holiday travel FAQ

Are shops open on public holidays in Europe?
It depends on the country. In Germany and Austria the law closes almost all shops on Sundays and public holidays, apart from those at stations and airports. Switzerland closes most shops on Sundays, and Czechia closes large stores on several holidays. In Spain, Italy and the UK many shops in tourist areas open, often with shorter hours. Supermarkets are the most likely to be closed, so buy food the day before.
Do trains and buses run on public holidays?
Usually yes, but on a reduced Sunday-style timetable, with fewer late services. A few days are exceptions: on Christmas Day no TfL services run in London, on Nyepi Bali's airport closes for 24 hours, and on Yom Kippur Israel's main airport closes. The bigger risk is demand: around Golden Week, Chinese New Year, Tet and Eid, trains and flights sell out weeks ahead.
Are museums open on public holidays?
Many big museums open on public holidays because that is when locals visit, but most close on 25 December and 1 January, and some close on 1 May. Italian state museums often open on Ferragosto. Korean palaces generally open during Seollal and Chuseok but may close the day after. Check the museum's own website, and expect longer queues than on a normal weekday.
What happens when a public holiday falls on a weekend?
Some countries move the day off to a weekday and others do not. The UK, the US, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand and South Africa give a substitute or observed day; in 2027, for example, UK Christmas and Boxing Day move to Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 December. France, Germany, Spain and Italy usually do not, so the day off is simply lost. The tool labels observed and substitute days.
Are public holidays the same across Germany, Spain or the US?
No. In Germany each of the 16 states sets its own extra days, so Corpus Christi on 27 May 2027 is a holiday in Bavaria but not in Berlin. Spain has 9 national days and each comunidad adds more. In the US, federal holidays apply to federal offices, while states and employers decide the rest. Pick a region in the tool to see exactly which days apply.
What is a bridge day?
A bridge day is a working day squeezed between a public holiday and a weekend, such as the Friday after a Thursday holiday. Many people take it off to make a four-day weekend. Italians call it a ponte, Spaniards a puente, the French a pont and Germans a Brückentag. Expect fuller trains and roads, higher hotel prices and some small businesses closed. The tool flags every bridge day in your trip.
Why isn't the Eid date confirmed yet?
Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha follow the Islamic lunar calendar, and most countries confirm the date only after religious authorities sight the new moon, often the evening before. Countries can differ by a day. For 2027, Eid al-Fitr is expected around 9 March (10 March in Indonesia and Malaysia) and Eid al-Adha around 16 May. The tool marks these dates as expected, never confirmed.
Is it a good idea to visit Japan during Golden Week?
Only if you book early and accept crowds. Golden Week 2027 covers 29 April and 3 to 5 May, and the Japan National Tourism Organization says trains and hotels fill up, especially at the start and end of the week, with higher prices. Big cities can feel quieter as residents leave, but popular sights and Shinkansen trains are very busy. Reserve seats and rooms well ahead.
Can tourists eat and drink in public during Ramadan?
Rules differ by country and city. Dubai says visitors who are not fasting can eat and drink, though some outlets close in the daytime. Abu Dhabi asks visitors not to eat, drink or smoke in public during daylight hours, and alcohol is served after sunset. In most countries, eating discreetly or in hotels and restaurants that stay open is fine. Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around 8 February.
When are school holidays in Europe in 2027?
They vary by country and region. Germany staggers summer holidays by state, France splits its winter and spring breaks into zones A, B and C, and the Netherlands uses north, middle and south regions. Most countries break for Christmas, Easter or spring, and summer. The tool shows school holidays for 32 European countries from OpenHolidays data; pick a school region to see exact dates.
What is the difference between a bank holiday and a public holiday?
A public holiday is a day off set by law for most workers. A bank holiday is, strictly, a day when banks close; in the UK and Ireland the term is used for public holidays in general. In some countries, such as Austria and Belgium, bank holidays like Christmas Eve or the Friday after Ascension close banks but not all shops or offices.
How far ahead are holiday dates published?
Most countries fix holidays by law years ahead, so 2027 and 2028 dates are already known. Some publish each year: China's State Council notice usually appears in early November for the following year, and Indonesia sets joint leave days annually. Islamic holidays are confirmed only after the moon sighting. The tool marks these dates as provisional or expected until they are confirmed.

About the data

Holiday dates are generated at build time from python-holidays 0.106 for 251 countries and their subdivisions, 2026 to 2028, then cross-checked against official sources: gov.uk for the UK, the Cabinet Office for Japan, OPM for US federal holidays and the State Council notice for China. UK bank holidays come straight from gov.uk. School holidays come from the OpenHolidays project. Travel notes are written by us from official tourism board, government and transport operator pages, each cited with the date we checked it. The checker loads only the files for the countries and years in your trip, and nothing you enter leaves your browser.
